2005: 250 Years after the Deportation
Numerous activities were organised in Acadie in 2005 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Deportation. The most important celebrations in 2005 took place in Nova Scotia at the Grand-Pré National Historic Site of Canada and included the unveiling of crosses and plaques, a minute of silence, speeches and large-scale performances. Activities commemorating the Grand Dérangement also took place elsewhere around Atlantic Canada. A variety of commemorative monuments were erected in Canada, France and the United States to symbolise the Grand Dérangement's different stages. Interest in this type of commemoration has greatly increased since 1855. While the centennial of the Grand Dérangement went by almost unnoticed, later celebrations showcased the Acadian community's newfound dynamic nature.
