Chezzetcook
After the Deportation, Chezzetcook was colonized by a group of Acadians who had been imprisoned in Halifax. That group included the four Petitpas brothers (Louis, Joseph, Jacques and Jean), Abraham Lavandier and Jean-Baptiste Roma. They were all from Port-Toulouse (St. Peters) Cape Breton and went to Chezzetcook around the middle of the 1760s to become fishermen and farmers. With the close proximity of Halifax and the absence of French schools, the Acadian population today is almost entirely assimilated, but there is still, mostly amongst the oldest inhabitants, a sense of belonging to the Acadian culture.
