Antonine Maillet (1929-)

Born in Bouctouche, New Brunswick, Antonine Maillet studied at the Université de Moncton, the Université de Montréal as well as the Université Laval, where she taught literature and folklore. In 1970, she received a PhD from the Université Laval and in 1971 she published La Sagouine, which gained her national recognition. With Acadie as her main source of inspiration, she is today one of the top authors in the international Francophonie. As well as the numerous honorary PhD's and distinctions received throughout her career, in 1979 she became the first writer not from France to receive the prestigious Goncourt prize for her novel Pélagie-la-Charrette. Today, Antonine Maillet remains Acadie's greatest ambassador. Thanks to her impressive body of literary work, thousands of people around the world learn about Acadian society.
