Cocagne

In the 17th century, French author and entrepreneur Nicolas Denys baptised this south-eastern region of New Brunswick "Cocagne", which meant "land of abundance". However, the first four Acadian families to permanently settle in that region only did so around 1767. Joseph Guéguen, François Arsenault, brothers Jean and Michel Bourque and Paul Hébert left Saint-Pierre et Miquelon in search of unoccupied land to settle on. Even though agriculture, forestry and fisheries were the village's dominant economic sectors, they were gradually replaced by small and medium-sized businesses. Michel Cormier, journalist for Radio-Canada television, and Allison Dysart, former New Brunswick Premier, were born in Cocagne.
