Around 1786, motivated by the need to find new land, Isidore and Joseph Bastarache and François and Charlitte LeBlanc left the Memramcook region and headed for Bouctouche. Formerly called Chebooktoosk or "big small harbour" by the region's Indians, Bouctouche is the birthplace of such renowned Acadians as poet Gérald Leblanc and author Antonine Maillet, as well as one of Canada's most well-known businessman, Kenneth C. Irving. Today the town of Bouctouche is one of Kent County's largest communities and has many internationally renowned tourist attractions such as the Pays de la Sagouine and the Bouctouche Dune Irving Éco-Centre.
