Attracted by new land and by the Robin Company, which was recruiting employees for its fishing installations, Acadians from the Bay of Chaleurs, Arichat and île Saint-Jean (today's Prince Edward Island) came to settle in Chéticamp. The Bois and Richard families (around 1782), as well as the Aucoins, Deveaus, Doucets, Gaudets and Poiriers (around 1785), were the first families of that region. Around the 1920s, a group of women from Chéticamp developed a business of making hooked rugs and the village became renowned for it. The most famous of them was Élizabeth Lefort.
