Shediac
Although pioneers first settled in the areas around what is today Shediac, it was not permanently occupied until the very end of the 18th century. The Arsenault, Gallant, LeBlanc, Petitpas, Richard and Vautour families settled in "La Batture" to find and cultivate new land. Shediac's geographic situation positively influenced its development, as evidenced by its former ferry services to Prince Edward Island, the former railway link between Shediac and Saint John, its lumber trade, its shipbuilding and the fishery. Shediac is renowned as the "lobster capital of the world". The first Acadian senator, Pascal Poirier, was from Shediac.
